He stuffed a lighted cherry bomb down each of their gullets and grinned happily when their necks exploded. He’d done similar things to countless sea bass and stripers, enjoying the sight of them nervously swimming away until their insides were blown to bits. Cats and dogs were harder to kill, the method usually more complicated. Luddy was amazed at how much damage could be done with a baseball bat, poison, gasoline and matches. He particularly enjoyed lighting the dogs afire because unlike cats, they seemed willing to trust him. He caught himself and flashed a friendly smile, all the while thinking he’d like to rip off her clothes and fuck her in the shallow stream with the water coursing around their bodies. Luddy clumsily got inside and closed the door. Gerty giggled at his uneasiness, which made him flush with anger. She undid his belt and pulled down his pants, engulfing him with her mouth. Luddy came almost immediately, which made Gerty smile impishly. When she mentioned that he seemed nervous and hurried and that she’d have to work on getting him ready again if they wanted to have more fun, Luddy’s mood began to change. The little slut was laughing at him, he had surmised, and it was then he reached for the tire iron on the floor of the back seat and struck her across the face and head. Gerty cried out, shocked by the blood on her hands. Luddy dropped the tire iron and gripped her neck with both hands, pressing his thumbs against her windpipe. He felt the cartilage crush. He introduced himself as Sinn Fein, which made Luddy’s two companions roar with laughter. “Actually, it’s Sean Fitzpatrick,” he said, extending a hand to Luddy who hesitantly gripped it. “I’ll be your, what should we call it? Your guide until you’re settled. You’ll be staying with me until we make other arrangements.” Fitzpatrick had been given no information about the man he agreed to hide other than he was from Boston and on the run from the law. He made a second one, greedily gulped it and fell asleep on the settee. When he awoke two hours later, he was shivering cold. He opened the sliding door to the cockpit where a light snow was falling and looked down at the teak floor. The woman’s eyes and mouth were open but she hadn’t moved. He physically shrank back in fear, taking a few seconds to realize she was dead. Sometime after midnight he steered the cabin cruiser toward the open sea, past Boston Harbor Light on Little Brewster Island where chunks of ice floated with the tide and he continued southeast toward Stellwagen Bank. When he was well beyond the shallow bank he threw her puffy jacket, cowboy boots and other clothing overboard, cutting them to shreds with his filet knife. He snipped a lock of her hair and cut the Tufts University sweatshirt into rags. Then he went to work on her body -- hands, feet, head, then arms, legs, torso in pieces. It was more difficult than he had remembered, particularly cutting through the bones with a hacksaw. It gave him new respect for the butcher he talked to nearly every day in the meat market near the waterfront. The man’s white apron was always spattered with blood, the knives and cleavers gleaming under the florescent lights. The farmer was there on his tractor. The ground was soft and the big green John Deere’s tires left their impression in the crushed soil. Rane waved and approached but the farmer didn’t immediately stop. Several minutes later he returned from the far end of the field, put the tractor in neutral, spat chewing tobacco and in a perplexed tone asked, “What the hell do you want?” Rane broke into his I’m-no-city-slicker routine, doing his best to act like a country boy. The farmer seemed to buy it. He talked briefly about the weather and the sweet corn and then about the dead woman he had found. He was angry with the police. “How am I supposed to work my field when they got it all roped off down the far end with that yellow tape? And what for? She’s not there anymore.” The yellow plastic crime scene tape was tied to the sturdiest cornstalks and created a generous perimeter around where the body was found. The farmer drank from a water jug, swished his mouth and spat out a stream. “If she had lain there another couple of days, nature would have taken care of everything,” he said without a hint of emotion. The farmer drank again, rinsed and spat. He capped the jug, set it back of the seat and put the tractor into gear. The machine lurched forward. Rane stepped out of the path of the big tires. The farmer shifted again and without as much of a nod drove the snorting tractor down the sloping field. Rane watched him go, staring at the place amid the withering cornstalks where he had first spotted the body. It had been just a patch of vibrant color until he had stopped for a closer look – chalky blue arms and legs sticking out from a short red dress. He obtained a list of the professor’s courses and the location of his office from the campus guidebook. The professor’s teaching load apparently was light – one summer session course and advisor to students completing their senior thesis projects. The office was in a small, two-story, red brick building down a path off the green and there appeared a steady stream of co-eds visiting, presumably for academic purposes. Using a 500mm telephoto lens, Decker was able to see into a first-floor window. From what Decker could gather, Pernell was certainly the feely type, making a habit of touching each young woman while offering them a chair. When the meetings were over, he routinely embraced them, although Decker couldn’t imagine why he needed to hug them. On the second day of surveillance, he watched Pernell and a student with chiseled features and straight blonde hair to her waist get into a red convertible sports car. Decker’s Jeep Cherokee was parked several blocks away so he couldn’t follow them. Instead, he strolled through the campus, pretending he was a prospective graduate student interested in taking courses. He asked several young women if they knew anything about the Anthropology Department and the teaching capabilities of its faculty, particularly Professor Pernell. Only one student among those asked had taken anthropology courses. When the name Carson Pernell came up, she rolled her eyes. “He’s highly intelligent and his courses are interesting, but he asks too many personal questions.” Just then, the two-seat roadster pulled up near the small brick building. Pernell and the young blonde were laughing and talking animatedly. Decker turned away and thanked the co-ed for her help. He crossed over the quad and took up a position where the brick building was still visible. Pernell got out of the car and opened the passenger door. He bowed deeply in a mocking fashion, which made the blonde laugh. When she was out of the car she gestured for him to rise, as though she were royalty. Decker clicked four frames, the last two showing Pernell kissing the young woman on the hand and then on the cheek. Her body had been weighted with two 20-pound Danforth anchors and about 10 feet of galvanized chain. A single lobster trap with a tri-colored buoy and coil of seaweed-coated pot warp line was woven into the tangled mess, preventing the anchor tines from gripping. The storm had done the rest. State Police and a few Marblehead cops were spreading a plastic tarp over the body when Paige and Rane arrived. Paige got some decent photos with a 300mm telephoto lens, detailed shots but not so graphic the editors would shy away from publishing them. The usual gawkers were there, trying to get as close as possible to the body, thrilled and frightened at the same time. The body was coated with sand and seaweed, the skin a bluish tone.
